Don't 'unpack everything eventually.' Unpack in this order — one system, seven days, and a home that functions from night one.

The First Week in Your New Home: An Unpacking Plan That Works

Unpacking has no deadline, which is exactly why it can drag on for months. The fix is a sequence: unpack for function first, comfort second, and perfection never (or at least, later). Here's the seven-day plan we recommend to every Move Me client.

Night one: beds, bathroom, coffee

Only three things matter on night one: beds assembled and made, one bathroom stocked (shower curtain, towels, toilet paper, toiletries), and tomorrow's breakfast plan. If your movers reassemble beds and place boxes room-by-room — ours do — night one is mostly done when the truck pulls away.

Day 1–2: the kitchen, ruthlessly

The kitchen is the highest-leverage room in the house: once it works, you stop bleeding money on takeout and the house starts feeling like home. Unpack coffee gear, everyday dishes, pots, utensils, and pantry basics first. Special-occasion serving ware can wait in its box for weeks without consequence.

Day 3–4: closets and the landing zone

  • Hang clothes before folding clothes — hanging is 5x faster and clears the most boxes.
  • Set up the entry 'landing zone': hooks, keys bowl, shoe spot. It prevents week-one chaos.
  • Place furniture in its real positions now, before boxes wall you in.

Day 5–6: living spaces and electronics

TV, Wi-Fi, lamps, sofa cushions, the rug. Reference the photos you took of cable setups before the move (past-you was smart). Books and décor go on shelves loosely — styling comes later; function now.

Day 7: the box amnesty

Whatever's still boxed, gather it in one room — usually the garage or a spare bedroom. Break down every empty box. Then adopt the one-box-a-day rule until the room is clear. If a box stays sealed for three months, its contents are donation candidates: you've just proven you don't miss them.
