How to Pack Dishes and Glassware So Nothing Breaks

Here's the single most valuable packing secret we can give you: plates travel vertically, like records — never stacked flat like pancakes. A vertical plate can absorb road vibration along its strongest axis; a flat stack concentrates all that force on the bottom plate. It's the difference between arriving with a full set and sweeping up ceramic confetti.

What you'll need

  • Small, sturdy boxes ('dish packs' or book boxes) — never large boxes for dishes
  • Packing paper (newsprint works; avoid printed newspaper on fine china)
  • Bubble wrap for stemware and sentimental pieces
  • Packing tape and a marker
  • Towels or crumpled paper for cushioning layers

Step 1: Build a crush zone

Line the bottom of the box with 2–3 inches of crumpled packing paper or a folded towel. This layer absorbs the bumps every truck bed transmits — skip it and the road hits your dishes directly.

Step 2: Wrap each plate, then bundle

Place a plate in the center of two sheets of paper and fold the corners over the face. Wrap 3–4 plates individually, then bundle the wrapped plates together with one outer sheet. Bundles keep plates snug against each other so they can't rattle.

Step 3: Load vertically, pack tight

Stand each bundle on its edge, like books on a shelf. Pack the row tight enough that nothing shifts when you gently shake the box, filling gaps with crumpled paper. Bowls nest in wrapped stacks of two or three; mugs and glasses get wrapped individually and packed rim-down in the top layer.

Step 4: Stemware gets the luxury treatment

Wine glasses break at the stem, so the stem gets wrapped first — a strip of paper wound around it — before the whole glass is wrapped in bubble wrap. If you own cell-divider box inserts, this is what they're for.

The mistakes that break dishes

  • Flat-stacking plates (the #1 cause of broken dishes in DIY moves)
  • Using big boxes — they get too heavy, and heavy dish boxes get dropped
  • Leaving air gaps; loose contents accelerate into box walls at every stop
  • Skipping the top cushion layer before taping shut
  • Forgetting to mark FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP on two sides
